Instructions for installing an optimised Seti@home Boinc app on a Mac

I have set up a forum so come and ask questions or offer suggestions

1. Go to here to download the most recent Boinc Manager, get the latest "Standard GUI" version.

2. Install Boinc Manager and attach to the seti@home project using this URL

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu

Make sure you have attached and that you have downloaded a few work units and then quit Boinc Manager

3. Go to the following link and download the most recent optimised app berkeley.edu/~alexkan, live links to each app are below

That page is run by Alex Kan who is responsible for the mac optimisation at the moment. He puts in a great deal of effort and expertise hand coding these apps and I offer my thanks for his continued effort here.

The current revision of these fast apps is V8

Note there is a different app available for each processor
these are G4, G5, Xeon, Core Duo, and Core 2 Duo for best results you must use the correct app for your processor. It should be noted that the graphic element of seti@home within Boinc is removed on these optimised apps.

4. Once you have downloaded the correct app, unzip the archive and you will find a folder containing about 7 files.

You need to copy all of the files into to the folder: /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/ on your main system drive . If you get a message to replace the contents there already click OK

5. Now you need to run the Boinc Manager installer again. this will correct a permissions issue that is created when you drag and drop the optimised app into the project folder. There are more technical ways of solving this but simply re-running the Boinc installer sorts it out without any data loss

6. That's it, Boinc Manager will start up and you will be running the fastest Seti app in the world :-)

Note: If you see the following error in Boinc Manager logs....... "Mac error -5000" this is a false error that can be ignored. Alex Kan is aware of this and it will be rectified when the next batch of updates is released for all of Mac versions.

The following link to Macintosh Q&A shows details as given by Alex:-
